Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand Transpower Full time
Use your engineering experience and passion for project management

  • Monitor performance of our service contracts (maintenance and projects)
  • Office and sitebased work to empower the energy future for New Zealand

Use your outstanding relationship management skills in a truly multifaceted and interesting HVDC & Power Electronics Service Delivery role.
Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid, a critical lifeline utility. With a whole-of-industry view of the electricity sector, we are at the forefront of the country's pending electricity transformation. Our team are working hard to enable accelerated electrification, and a sustainable net carbon zero future.

About the team

Essential to powering our country, the HVDC link unifies the grid between the North and South islands with a large amount of renewable energy generated in the South and a growing load requirement in the North.

The HVDC & Power Electronics team is responsible for maintaining maximum effectiveness and mínimal disruption of the HVDC & Power Electronics system.

The team monitors system performance based on safety, grid reliability, and availability through the efficient and effective execution of Transpower's maintenance and project contracts.

The team also provides future planning that will ensure Transpower achieves the best from its assets that run the length and breadth of New Zealand.

HVDC Service Delivery Managers are located in both the South and North Islands and are supported by the Service Performance Manager and broader HVDC and team.

About the opportunity
Based in Christchurch, you'll support the Benmore-based HVDC Converter Station and North Island-based power electronic equipment.

You will effectively manage maintenance and project works for HVDC and Power Electronics contracts with commercial acuity and high standards of safety and quality.

You'll enjoy engaging with internal and external stakeholders and liaising with contractors - managing maintenance, projects, and scheduling works.

Ultimately you ensure all apparatus, equipment, and systems associated with the Transpower HVDC link, power electronics assets (Static Synchronous Compensators, Static Var Compensators, Reactive Power Controllers) are monitored, maintained, serviced, repaired, and operated as per the standards in respect to cost, timeliness, safety, and quality.

Pole 2 of the HVDC link is currently undergoing a mid-life refurbishment with many projects being undertaken to refurbish and/or replace many of the key components of the system.

This will ensure this critical piece of infrastructure continues to reliably support New Zealand for another 20 years.

You'll be able to fully utilise your outstanding stakeholder and relationship management skills as you:

  • Assure service delivery performance
  • Provide asset maintenance management, oversight of maintenance projects and ultimately equipment commissioning / operational acceptance
  • Oversee asset conditioning and monitoring, and operational and project contract management
Naturally you'll ensure works come in on budget and produce reporting for budgeting purposes for the Service Performance Manager. You'll navigate and manage risk and compliance including striving for continual improvement in Health and Safety performance. While you'll be called upon outside of core business hours to support major fault investigations, this is infrequent.

What you'll bring
A calm approach to problem solving at pace, and a passion for supporting critical assets that operate 24/7.

You'll be able to relate to and engage with a wide range of people, and comfortably pivot between corporate contract management and field-based commissioning work.

Your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate:

  • A relevant Engineering qualification (e.g. Degree/New Zealand Certificate/Diploma in Engineering NZCE/NZDE equivalent etc)
  • Experience in transmission or electricity distribution and understanding of the assets to be maintained/commissioned
  • Site based experience and a full New Zealand Drivers licence
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
Whilst not essential, ideally you'll have experience in improving service delivery performance, including safety, quality, and commercial outcomes. HVDC experience is also favourable.

Why you should join us
This is a stimulating role where you can really make a difference with your skills and systems thinking.
