About the opportunity


Join Fonterra in this new varied and fast-paced role as our Environmental Policy Advisor (known internally as Environmental Policy Manager).

You will manage a portfolio of Central government, Regional and District policy and planning development processes as they relate to Fonterra's manufacturing and logistics operations.


Reporting to the National Environmental Policy Manager and working closely with the Water and Environment team, you will provide strategic understanding, insight, and guidance into policy issues as they impact on Fonterrra.

Additionally, you will get involved and take the lead on the rollout of the Freshwater Regional Plans across the regions as they impact on Fonterra.


This impactful role will give you ample exposure across the Co-op and get you working across all related environmental policy work for our NZ sites.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Proactive identify policy and planning changes in advance of a "formal" process commencing and assist in leading the development and delivery of strategies and responses
  • Technical manage and coordinate the documentation of clear, consistent, and compelling written submissions, further submissions and evidence
  • Internal Relationships work with the relevant internal Fonterra teams to ensure collective understanding and a coordinated approach for selected policy programs
  • Project Management manage consultants who support the policy program and plan changes, meet financial deliverables, and ensure timely delivery of inputs
  • Advice provide strategic advice to Fonterra on environmental policy and land use risk across its manufacturing and logistics assets.


Ideally you will be based in Hamilton to work across the Waikato region, however for the right incumbent we can be flexible if you are close to a Fonterra manufacturing site or office.

Please note that travel, typically once a month, is required to the South Island to connect with the wider team and stakeholders.


About you


As an environmental expert with knowledge across the Resource Management Act and National Freshwater Policy, you will demonstrate an in-depth understanding of all aspects of environmental management and statutory and regulatory requirements.


Being a highly driven, engaging, and transparent individual who is well-organised and well-structured, will help you go far in this role.

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • Extensive work experience across the resource management field, ideally in both the policy and consenting areas
  • Established relationships within the local government network and planning consultancies
  • Hold a tertiary or relevant qualification in environmental management/resource management or science/engineering field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (including technical report writing) and the ability to connect with a range of audiences
  • Ability to represent Fonterra externally in front of court hearings, local community, and council.
