Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
You will be part of a relatively new advising team within UC's exciting new student hub, Te Pātaka.

You will be responsible for whanaungatanga, building relationships, with first year and new ākonga including Māori and Pasifika.

The manaakitanga and tiakitanga you will provide to ākonga will ensure your culturally responsive, appropriate, accurate and timely academic advice and support empowers and assists students in their successful transition to tertiary study and beyond.

You will adopt proactive, data-informed practices and provide customised support to improve retention, achievement, and completion rates especially for priority learners.

A focus will be to contribute to an advising community of practice that seeks to improve systems, processes, and practices across the university to enhance ākonga learning experiences.


Mōu | Who You Are
To be successful in this role you will have a commitment to uphold UC's values, and will have the following skills and experiences:

  • Bachelor's Degree (NZQA Level 7) or above, in relevant field
  • Previous experience providing targeted pastoral support for ākonga, preferably within a tertiary education environment
  • An evidencebased understanding of the academic, social and cultural needs of ākonga
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a passion for ākonga achievement
  • Active commitment to upholding the values, tikanga (protocols and processes), kawa (rules) of cultural practice and traditions as guided by mana whenua, Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Ngāi Tahu, and valuing te reo Māori.
  • Competency in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga is an advantage
  • An understanding of the developmental needs of ākonga
  • An ability to work collaboratively and creatively as part of a high performing team developing new processes and practices
  • Proven commitment to enhancing bicultural and intercultural competence and effectiveness.
