We are seeking a Principal Advisor who is eager to develop their leadership capability and experience, while also supporting the performance of their team and the Ministry.

This role supports the Manager and the Puni to provide high quality governance oversight, advice and guidance to the Executive Leadership Team, Governance Boards, and any sub-committees as required.


The role will focus on:

  • Supporting the Manager with the development and delivery of the Governance work programme and priority workstreams.
  • Providing thought leadership and strategic analysis of work required by the Manager.
  • Driving continuous improvement and capability uplift around best practice governance activity.
  • Providing oversight of key workstreams across the governance boards and identifying emerging risks or issues.
  • Providing secretariat support for the governance boards and Executive Leadership Team meetings.
  • Supporting the Manager Governance with the operations of the team.

  • Proven ability to work with senior leadership.
  • Experience leading projects or workstreams.
  • Excellent communication skills in both oral and written work.
  • A strong understanding of accountability frameworks and the importance of effective governance.
  • Knowledge of New Zealand context relating to government accountability.
  • Ability to identify, build and actively manage significant relationships, valuing diverse perspectives and experiences.
  • The ability to work in collaboration with peers and to influence key stakeholders.
  • Understanding of the relevance of the Treaty of Waitangi to the work being undertaken.
  • A high level of personal integrity and courage.
  • Comfort in operating in a tikanga / kaupapa Māori environment, a degree of fluency in Te Reo Māori is desirable.
