This new role will play a key part in the Children and Young People's Commission that commences on 1 July.

As part of our Policy team you will work closely with the Board of up to six Commissioners, as they determine the strategic direction for the new agency.

You will help ensure the Board has what it needs to operate effectively and to set a strategic direction that will make a real difference for mokopuna in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Staff of the current Office of the Children's Commissioner, including this role, will transfer into the Commission to deliver its responsibilities for advocating for mokopuna and monitoring important aspects of government's treatment of them.

Mō te tūnga / About the role

The Principal Advisor Governance is a new role that will enable the Board to provide clear and effective strategic direction within its governance role.

Delivering practical advice, guidance and support you will act as a key advisor to the Chief Executive and the Chief Policy Officer, and support the link between the Board and the wider Commission.

As the new Board embeds, you will provide guidance on the governance relationship and support the Commission to navigate this new way of working.

You will work closely with the Secretariat Administrator, who will report directly to you, to ensure efficient end-to-end secretariat services and facilitate high-quality, appropriately focused advice from the organisation to the Board.

Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu / What you will bring

You will have extensive experience at a senior or principal level, including in a secretariat or governance function, with particular experience providing advice and guidance on complex organisational governance issues.

Ideally, you will also have experience with supporting the establishment of a new Board.
Your relationship skills will be second to none and you will be organisationally savvy and adept at influencing.

Your excellent written and verbal communication skills will mean you have the ability to communicate complex information clearly and to produce papers and other materials of consistent high quality.


  • Sound knowledge of Machinery of Government and State Sector processes and systems, including government accountability processes
  • The demonstrated ability to scan for risks and opportunities, and implement strategies to address these
  • The ability to lead others to deliver tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise, meet deadlines and deliver desired results by taking ownership and using effective self and time management approaches
  • Proficiency in te reo Māori and tikanga Māori, or a commitment to broadening your knowledge in these areas is highly desirable.
