About the Role


The Kaitohutohu Mātāmua - Aroturuki me ngā Rawa Karauna, Principal Advisor Monitoring & Crown Ownership (Governance) is a key leadership role within the team, with primary responsibility for planning and delivering a work programme to monitor and enhance governance capability across the sector.

This includes managing the process via which the Minister of Education appoints members to councils of universities, wānanga, Te Pūkenga, and workforce development councils, as well undertaking activities to support and promote good governance practices.


The Principal Advisor works closely with the rest of the Monitoring and Crown Ownership (MCO) leadership group and the wider team to support and as needed, lead the monitoring of overall organisational performance, risk, and viability of tertiary education institutions.

This overarching view is critical to the TEC's role as steward of the tertiary system, and will draw on your governance insights and expertise, as well as experience in organisational capability monitoring.

What will you be doing?

As a leader within the MCO team you will also be responsible for driving a continuous approach across frameworks, systems, and processes to ensure the TEC effectively and efficiently delivers on its functions.


  • Develop and lead the delivery of TEC's governance work programme, including assessing sector governance capability and gaps, planning, and delivering events and providing support to enhance sector governance.
  • Managing the process of (including providing advice on) appointing members to councils of tertiary education institutions and workforce development councils.
  • Contributing to and leading key projects and programmes of work to ensure TEC delivers on its responsibilities to monitor the financial and organizational performance of tertiary education institutions and manages Crown risks.
  • Providing robust advice and reporting to the TEC's senior management, Board, and the Minister of Education.
  • Providing a key link between the TEC's monitoring work and other functions, supporting the TEC's teams focused on investment and learner success.

  • Monitoring: Experience and expertise in organisational monitoring approaches, with financial performance monitoring experience also desirable

  • Leadership: Management and leadership skills, and a passion for coaching and mentoring
  • Cultural awareness: You are committed to building your cultural competencies and deepening your understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Networking: Existing, wellestablished professional networks and familiarity with the tertiary education sector are desirable,

The salary range for this position starts from $121,148 up to $142,527 + depending on demonstrable skills and experience.
