We are seeking a Principal Advisor who will bring their leadership, experience, and expertise to the Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga tīma at Te Puni Kōkiri_

Te Whiwhinga Mahi | The opportunity


Te Puni Kōkiri, jointly with Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga, is responsible for the delivery of Whai Kainga Whai Oranga (WKWO) - the Government's flagship Māori housing programme.

Established in 2021, the programme is responsible for increasing Māori housing supply in priority areas, providing additional whare repairs, and building Māori housing sector capability.


Through WKWO, Te Puni Kōkiri is supporting individuals, whānau, hapū, iwi and rōpū with funding, information, advice, and practical support to achieve their housing aspirations.


The Principal Advisor - Planning will lead the development of the Māori housing work programmes to ensure all aspects of the programme key deliverables or outcomes are captured, tracked, analysed, and reported through to key stakeholders and governance group/s.


Additionally, the Principal Advisor - Planning will provide support to staff who are leading projects to successfully deliver within scope, budget, and timeframes to the satisfaction of the customer or stakeholder/s.

The common areas for success in this role are:

  • Experience working on large and complex programmes
  • Advanced experience in evaluating project progress and facilitating interventions
  • Experience working in complex delivery environments, sequencing, and planning delivery activities
  • Knowledge of project/programme planning tools and software including expert knowledge of Jira
  • Knowledge and experience of project management methodologies (agile, waterfall, hybrid) and tools and processes are preferred
  • Excellent communication skills essential
  • Communicating with a wide range of audiences on complex issues.
  • Understanding of relevant systems and processes, including accountability requirements and the use of performance information to inform decisionmaking.
  • Development of business process and system requirements and service level documentation, including of major process change.
  • Design and management of business acceptance testing.
  • Comfort in operating in a tikanga / kaupapa Māori environment.
  • A degree of fluency in Te Reo Māori is desirable. Te Reo Māori lessons are available inhouse.
