He kōrero mō te tūranga | The Role


As a Specialist Assessor - You'll be providing support within our Specialist Support service, which is located in Christchurch - You'll join clients on their journey, assessing their needs, providing a safe environment, and supporting them with their goals and daily tasks.

You will work alongside with Oranga Tamariki/whanau or caregivers to create comprehensive needs assessments.

Providing case coordination to ensure the child, young person and their family/whanau or caregivers have access to appropriate services, and you'll continue to work with families in there onwards referrals to facilitate meaningful engagement with other agencies.


You'll provide specialist advice to Oranga Tamariki Southern Region staff relating to health, mental health and disability issues as well as working strategically with Oranga Tamariki to improve outcomes for clients with a disability and/or a mental health issue.


This is a split role which is 0.5 specialist assessor and 0.5 plan lead as part of Te Whiri Ora with both roles supporting Whānau to thrive.


As the specialist assessor you will work with Whānau to help identify their needs and create a needs assessment for them, you will then where possible address these needs whether this be work you can do or refer out to the best services for the Whānau.


As the plan lead liaison for Te Whiri Ora, you will do similar work as this is also about helping whanau thrive, you will work with other agencies that may already be involved to ensure all needs are being met.

In this part of the role, we work at the pace of the whanau and will stay involved until they are thriving.

To be successful in this role it is desirable that your skill base includes:

  • Demonstrated commitment to recovery values and models.
  • Risk management skills
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills including well developed documentation and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.
  • Experience working with children and families.
  • Ability to work collaboratively

What you need:

  • A qualification covered by the HPCA 2003, or a Social Worker Registration with a current Annual Practicing certificate.
  • Preferably post qualifying experience with a minimum of 2 years working within the Mental Health/AOD Sector
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and culturally safe practice.
  • A current full clean driver's license
