The National Whip's Office is looking for an experienced manager to lead the general administration and operations of the National Party Whips' Office.

This is a vital role and is an opportunity to support National's backbench members of parliament and their support staff.

You will manage a range of relationships, communications and operational activities that support the smooth operations of the National Whips' Office.

Strong leadership and relationship management skills are key in this role.

The Office Manager is responsible for:

  • ensuring robust management of the systems and practices underpinning the operations of the Whip's Office. This includes establishing, monitoring and continually improving office systems and administration
- creating an engaging team dynamic of collaboration and cooperation, supporting the development of staff and ensuring a culture of continuous improvement and learning is fostered
- managing multiple direct reports, including providing day to day management and leadership of the National Whip's Office Relief Overload Team, other staff who work to the Whip, and on-precinct member support staff
- working in an advisory capacity within the Whips' Office on issues of political sensitivity, relationship management, employment, and navigating parliamentary rules and regulations
- developing and managing the budgets of the National Whip's Office.


To succeed in this role, you will have five to ten years' relevant experience in people leadership and administrative management, preferably in a public sector or political setting.

You will have significant staff management experience and a track record of leading high performing teams.

You will have experience managing office systems and finances, and a working understanding of the Official Information Act and the parliamentary environment.

Appointments will be based on skills and experience. Employees are employed on an 'events based' agreement, with your employment linked to the National Party Whip. This role is based at the Parliamentary precinct in Wellington, for 40 hours per week.
