Mō te tūnga | About the Role

The National Office Health Services team is responsible for the Department's overall focus on oranga, inclusive of general health, mental health, addictions, and disability.

Our priority is to provide services that support the advancement of Pae Ora and health equity for Māori. We do this through our strategies, policies, and practices.

Within prisons we have a multi-disciplinary approach to service provision to ensure we target and meet the needs of the people in our care and how we support their care pathways back to community.

The National Rongoā Māori Manager will be responsible for leading the strategic development of Rongoā Māori approaches across health services and setting the direction of Rongoā for Ara Poutama Aotearoa.

Ara Poutama is commitment to the integration of Rongoā Māori, supporting the successful integration of Rongoā across health services to enable options and access for people in our care and management.

Through the Rongoā Māori work programme, the Rongoā Māori Manager will support the design, development and implementation of health services strategy, policy, research, and evaluation from a mātauranga Māori foundation.

Specifically, you will lead the strategic design, development, and implementation of Rongoā Māori services, and develop the National Framework for Rongoā Māori in collaboration and partnership with the wider health systems.

We want you to identify opportunities and understand gaps in the current health services' ability to authentically deliver on a Rongoā Māori and Kaupapa Māori health service and lead a team of professionals, using kaupapa Māori frameworks and methodologies to identify gaps and uplift the capability of staff to deliver on health projects linked to Hōkai Rangi.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and Experience

  • Fully developed knowledge of mātauranga Māori and experience embedding this into strategies, policies, procedures, tools, and resources within a health setting,
  • Strong strategic vision and practice and a fully developed understanding of Rongoā Māori,
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively within Te Ao Māori and Te Ao Hurihuri and display core skills in te reo Māori and in tikanga Māori,
  • Business and strategic reporting experience in either iwi Māori organisations, whānau ora or government agencies, in particular facilitating with senior leaders to achieve results and develop strong relationships with key partners such as iwi, and stakeholder relationships across the public sector,
  • Experience leading and influencing during a time of significant change experience working collaboratively to achieve organisational outcomes.


The salary range for this role is $128,844 up to $181,897 per annum and appointment will be based on skills and experience relevant to the role.

The work profile for this position is Monday to Friday, working a 40-hour week.

Applicants must be a New Zealand citizen, New Zealand Resident Permit holder, Australian citizen or an Australian resident who holds a current Australian Resident Return Visa.
