Mō tēnei tūranga | About the programme

Ngā Iti Kahurangi is a programme delivering a defined set of building improvements helping the Ministry achieve its 2030 goal for quality of learning environments.

There are approximately 750 small or remote schools in the programme.

The way the programme is structured means there are 1,500 discrete projects (two at each school) that need to be completed by June 2026.

This is a significant logístical challenge and requires a close working relationship with three external project management companies, five product suppliers and a freight & logistics company.

This work is complicated by the need to manage work in an environment where asbestos containing material is common and a high number of cases where asbestos decontaminations are required.

Mōhou ake | About you

You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.


You will also bring:

  • Sound relationship skills and ability to manage contractors delivering infrastructure projects
  • Strong financial skills, highly competent with data manipulation and project reporting (Power BI preferable)
  • Technical skills in CRM (Salesforce preferable)
  • Ideally 5 yrs min of equivalent project management exp
  • Project or programme management qualification such as Prince 2, MSP certification or other recognised accreditation
Demonstrated experience in at least five of the following areas:

  • Supplier contracts and contractual performance reporting
  • Managing Project Control Groups
  • Project delivery in a central / local government environment
  • Lighting, acoustics or electrical upgrade projects
  • Asbestos management plans, asbestos refurbishment surveys and asbestos decontaminations
  • Capitalisation of projects
  • Asset management software
  • Task and resource allocation

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau.

To better deliver on this, we are currently undergoing an organisational design change. The transition phase to improve the way we deliver our purpose will be complete in 2023.
