The opportunity:

Join our fun and high performing team as a Portfolio Manager.

Your new role will see you build trusted relationships across your portfolio of Ministerial Offices, supporting each of your teams to provide unrivalled support to their Ministers (usually 6-8 direct reports, with around indirect reports).

In this highly relational leadership position, you could expect to:

  • Work alongside each of your Senior Private Secretaries to ensure the recruitment and induction, learning and development, and wellbeing needs of Ministerial office staff are met. Together you will set the performance expectations for all staff, coach and encourage high performance, and manage any performance concerns as they arise.
  • Provide advice and approvals on finance and entitlements for Ministers and their staff.
  • Act as an escalation point for all staff if required on issues affecting health, safety and wellbeing.
  • Provide pastoral care for all staff including seconded Portfolio Private Secretaries
  • Engage in the playful culture of a supportive team committed to the success of the Executive
What skills or experience would I need to be successful?

  • Exceptional relationship building skills, enabling you to quickly build effective working relationships with your Ministers, their teams, your peers, and key internal and external stakeholders
  • The ability to work and problem solve at pace, role modelling positivity, maturity and resilience
  • Experience in the development and leadership of high performing teams, with notable strengths in coaching, mentoring, and supporting teams through change
  • Previous experience working on the Parliamentary precinct or working closely with ministerial offices
  • Welldeveloped communication skills and political nous, with confidence communicating at an executive level
  • A working knowledge of the machinery of government and NZ employment law


This is a permanent position, the salary band for this role is $110, ,124 per annum, with starting salaries reflecting relevant skills and experience, as well as internal parity.
