The Whakapapa whanau are a small but ambitious team, running year-round operations on the northern slopes of Mt Ruapehu. In winter, from June until October, this includes a world-class ski area. In summer, from December until April, this includes our summer sightseeing operation, heroing our iconic Sky Waka gondola.
Each year we welcome hundreds of thousands of manuhiri (guests) to Whakapapa, many with life-long connections to the maunga (mountain) and surrounding rohe (region), some even third or fourth generation.
Our ski and ride instructors are able to teach all ages and lesson types whilst creating a fun, safe, and caring learning environment.
As a member of the team at Whakapapa, you will create an empowering learning experience that keeps our manuhiri (guests) coming back and enjoying this winter playground year in and year out.
Mo te tunga | About the role
No two days at Mt Ruapehu are the same so you will need to adapt on a daily basis using sound teaching techniques.
You can expect that you will:
- Make sure our guests have loads of fun
- Consistently meet the minimum teaching standards required by the qualification held.
- Provide efficient, polite and professional service to all guests.
- Provide uptodate and accurate information to the public on products and prices and what they can experience on Mt Ruapehu Ski Areas
As an experienced Ski Instructor, you will bring a:
- Relevant and recognised ski qualification
- Commitment to great guest service
- Ability to build effective teaching and working relationships with a wide range of people
- Respond in a positive and proactive manner to feedback from supervisors/managers
- Maintain an approachable and cooperative persona with coworkers and guests
- A tolerance for uncertain market and weather conditions (particularly the weather conditions)
- A flexible approach to rosters, guest needs and the direction of the organisation
- A positive, fun and happy personality
If you are not yet qualified and are looking for an opportunity to become a ski or snowboard instructor, we also run a programme for rookie instructors alongside EA (Educating Adventures).
