Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora has committed to prioritising Tāngata whaikaha | Disabled people as an equity group (or priority population). This is the first-time disabled people have been formally recognised as a priority group in the New Zealand health system. The Principal Advisor will play a crucial in ensuring the rights, aspirations, needs and voice of Tāngata whaikaha | Disabled people** **are considered across all design, planning and implementation undertaken by the Commissioning team.
**Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity**
We have an important role in supporting the Crown in its relationships with Māori under te Tiriti o Waitangi | the Treaty of Waitangi. The government is committed to improving services and outcomes for Māori and strengthening the Crown's relationships with Māori.
We are responsible for designing community-based systems of care, agreeing health and wellbeing plans, executing those plans, and monitoring outcomes which then feed into the design process. We work in partnership with our Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora colleagues to shape system-wide public health services across the motu.
The Principal Advisor, Disability is a member of national system design team. You will support the Chief Advisor, Disability to play a critical role in providing well-founded strategic advice, insights, and thought leadership to ensure equity driven commissioning for disabled people exists across the commissioning group.
You will support the professional development of the commissioning workforce, drive continuous improvements through internal capability and quality assurance processes. You will implement a programme of work alongside the Chief Advisor, that ensures the disability population is recognised as an equity group and commissioned services meet their needs.
The Disability Equity Team in National Commissioning works in collaboration with other colleagues across the organisation in disability equity roles and is connected by a dotted line to the Disability Strategy Team, Office of the Chief Executive
**Ngā pūkenga me ngā weako | Skills and experience**
- Experience supporting the design of services are equitable and inclusive of disabled people, including seeking the voice of disabled people
- Is a credible voice for Tāngata whaikaha | Disabled People within the disability community
- experience researching and drafting policies or strategies specific to disabled people
- Experience providing strategic advice and guidance to the leadership team.
- Expertise in utilising the collective experiences of whanau and consumers to inform and influence strategy.
- Experience communicating complex information and ideas in both oral and written communication to a range of audiences including senior management, Board and Ministers.
- Experience supporting the professional development of staff to enhance the skills and responsiveness of teams to provide effective services to disabled people.
- Experience establishing and nurturing strong, mutually beneficial relationships with partners, government and across sectors.
