**Ko ake mahi - What you'll do**
This is a fixed-term or secondment opportunity for an experienced Principal Advisor to join the team. This team support the Director of Mental Health and Addiction's regulatory roles.
The team:
- Monitors and reports on the mental health system's compliance with legal requirements
- Advises the Director of Mental Health and Addiction, and the Minister
- Regulates the system that enables recreational drugs to be tested to minimise harm
The principal advisor will be expected to:
- Understand the New Zealand health and disability sector
- Help strengthen the Ministry's regulatory role
- Provide high quality advice and support to the Director of Mental Health and Addiction that is legally robust and appropriately balances all the relevant factors
- Support coach and mentor other members of the team
- Be able to operate without a high degree of direction, using initiative and judgement to know how to manage risks and escalate appropriately

The Director of Mental Health and Addictions has statutory responsibility for administering Mental Health, Substance Addiction and Intellectual Disability legislation. We support services to deliver effective mental health, addiction treatment and compulsory care for their areas of responsibility. We administer protective mechanisms that aim to ensure that any compulsory intervention only reduces a consumer's rights to the extent necessary for treatment and care to be effective.
