Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

Toitū te marae a Tāne-Mahuta, toitū te marae a Tangaroa, toitū te tangata
If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive

Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and sustain nature across Aotearoa. We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by te reo Māori, te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We do this by:

- Protecting land, species, ecosystems, and cultural heritage for conservation purposes
- Managing threats and adverse impacts
- Being a voice for conservation
- Connecting people to nature

Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) is seeking an experienced professional to join us as Insight and System Performance Manager - Heritage, and Visitors. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the performance of DOC's Heritage and Visitor systems, providing analytical insight and strategic direction for this work.

He angitūtanga | About the role
This is a key role in the Heritage and Visitor system and we're looking for a star performer to help the Director strengthen DOC's heritage work and to provide strategic leadership on how DOC's network of visitor experiences is sustainable into the future.
There are some big challenges ahead; tourist numbers are quickly returning after COVID. We need to find a way to harness sustainable tourism that gives back to conservation, while building resilience to a changing climate. We also need to ramp up our work protecting and promoting New Zealand's unique heritage sites and stories so that they are enduring for future generations.
You will lead a team of ten staff and build relationships within DOC, the tourism industry and across government to maximise conservation outcomes and coordination of efforts across the system.

**Key responsibilities**:

- Provide strategic leadership on the performance of the heritage and visitor system
- Lead and coordinate system improvements in partnership with other parts of DOC
- Determine and deliver insights required to inform the Heritage and Visitor system
- Provide strategic analytical insights to inform decision-making aligned with DOC's integrated strategy and understand and communicate changing visitor trends and needs
- Ensure the Heritage and Visitor Unit effectively translates strategy into action
- Lead the evaluation of key interventions to support learning and improvement
- Identify significant detailed design and business process improvement work required to support sub-systems

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
To be considered for this role you will have demonstrated experience in leading system-wide improvements. You will be a strategic thinker, with strong relationship management experience, a good understanding of research, monitoring, reporting, evaluation, and knowledge of the machinery of Government. It would be advantageous to understand the work of the Department and how it contributes to New Zealand's future conservation outcomes and visitor experiences.
At DOC, we are focussed on protecting and sustaining nature for current and future generations. We partner with whānau, hapū, and iwi, and collaborate with commercial partners, NGOs, volunteers, and government agencies to improve conservation outcomes. As a leader within DOC, you will be visible, open, and engaging, proactive, and agile.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What's in it for you?
Te Papa Atawhai is committed to fostering a diverse workforce that represents the communities we serve, creating an inclusive workplace culture, supporting the relationship between Māori and the Crown, and lifting our cultural capability. We encourage our people to bring their authentic self and unique perspectives to work, in pursuit of our collective aspirations. Our commitment to well-being and professional development includes:

- Flexible working opportunities suited to your role
- Career development, secondment and training opportunities to help you realise your goals
- Study assistance in programmes that are relevant to your work
- Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and discounted medical insurance
- Great discounts on DOC accommodation and outdoor apparel and gear so you're ready for your next adventure

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory - this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
