We have a unique and exciting opportunity to join the Ministry for Primary Industries as the Deputy Director-General Te Uru Rākau - New Zealand Forest Service. This is a transformational leadership role in a sector that is vital to New Zealand achieving a more productive, sustainable, and inclusive economy through the Fit for a Better World roadmap.
In this critical senior leadership role, you will drive the development and growth of the forest service and work with the forestry sector to promote and protect Aotearoa's precious resources.
You will also help deliver vital on the ground support for industry as we expand the forestry advisory service across New Zealand.
This influential position will support the growth and management of the forestry sector and deliver on a wide range of significant initiatives. You will be responsible for ensuring Te Uru Rākau - New Zealand Forest Service provides strategic guidance and advice at a national level to optimise the use of our resources and to provide direct support to landowners, local government, and the wider sector.
Using your extensive experience, you will work closely with the forestry and wood processing sectors to harness the economic, environmental and employment benefits created now and into the future for the forestry sector.

Mōu - About You

**To be successful in this high-profile role, you will offer**:

- In-depth knowledge and understanding of the forestry sector, and land use policy;
- Established and trusted relationships within the forestry sector;
- Proven political nous and the ability to lead engagement with Ministers and Iwi;
- Proven capability and delivery and management of large-scale programmes, budgets and teams;
- Experience in a ‘start up' or in the development of large and complex operational structures;
- Superior people leadership;
- Strong relationship management and communication skills.

The role will require frequent travel between our Rotorua and Wellington offices.

- Most preferably a New Zealand citizen who has resided continuously in New Zealand for at least the last ten (10) years, OR
- Is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last ten (10) years: either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
