The Trade and International Relations Directorate drives MPIs trade and export related effort to deliver on the Governments trade and export growth goals.

Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role


Reporting to the Deputy Director General Policy and Trade, the Associate Deputy Director-General Trade and International Relations (ADDG) will lead the development and implementation of a trade and market access strategy and provide strategic, change and international leadership for MPI.


This newly created role will oversee a large team comprising of two recently combined functions, those being International Policy and Market Access.

At its heart, this is a leadership role and the ADDG will create and communicate a clear vision, work programme, and supporting structure that motivates and facilitates a cohesive and enabling team culture that can deliver on this essential work.


Unique in its nature and breath, the ADDG will also play a pivotal role in driving New Zealand's economic and trade objectives.

Leading the development and implementation of MPIs trade strategy, the ADDG will also represent MPI's interests domestically and internationally, forging strong relationships with stakeholders and international counter-parts and partners.


Other key responsibilities of this position include:
Lead and provide strategic oversight of key trade and international relations initiatives and issues.

Lead relationships with key stakeholders including other government departments, sector groups, international counterparts, the private sector.

Ensure MPI meets its obligations under a range of agreements that New Zealand has with other countries, groupings of countries and international forums.

Represent MPI and New Zealand's primary sector interests on the international stage and enhance New Zealand's reputation as a trusted supplier of safe, authentic and sustainably produced food & beverages, fibre and other primary products to consumers and businesses around the world.

Lead a directorate culture that supports successful integration functions and a focus on opportunities and results.
Lead, develop and support the directorate leaders to form a cohesive and high performing leadership team.


Manage all resources and outcomes within the function through the effective implementation of organisational processes and procedures (e.g., health and safety, recruitment, financial, planning, monitoring, and reporting).

Mōu - About You


To be successful in this role you will be a proven senior leader with extensive experience leading proactively and positively through times of change.

With a large and complex international trade component to the role, it will be essential that you are able to display knowledge and experience in this area.

You will have excellent stakeholder engagement skills and you will ideally have credibility at the Executive and Ministerial level.
International networks and experience would be an advantage.

You will thrive in engaging a diverse network of stakeholders around a vision and setting strategic direction, while influencing the delivery of shared outcomes.


The ideal candidate will have a:
Relevant Tertiary Qualification in international relations, public policy, science or economics

Track record of successful strategic leadership and management at an executive level, with high level strategic capability and the ability to maintain a clear focus on long term goals.


Significant experience in successfully managing relationships with a range of stakeholders, with demonstrated successes in gaining the support and participation of key individuals and groups.

Demonstrated ability to find common ground and solve problems for the good of all.

Represent MPI's interests and yet be fair to other groups, solve problems with peers with a minimum of noise, gain trust easily and support peers and encourage collaboration.

Demonstrated ability to develop, lead and motivate multi-disciplinary teams.
Understanding of New Zealand's trade policy architecture and global rules-based trade systems.
Knowledge of current international trends, challenges and opportunities for New Zealand's exports of primary products, food and fibre

Ngā Taki Whakahaumaru - Security checks

You will hold or be able to obtain the required Top Secret security clearance for this role.

Minimum Security Clearance Eligibility Requirements

most preferably a New Zealand citizen, who has resided continuously in New Zealand for at least the last five (5) years, OR

is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five (5) years: either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
