Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai serves to protect and sustain nature across Aotearoa. We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by te reo Māori, te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We do this by:

- connecting people to nature.

**He angitūtanga | About the role**

We currently have two opportunities available as Technical Advisor
- Freshwater to join our highly motivated team of technical and scientific specialists. In these roles you will utilise your technical skillset to work on some of the more complex and challenging conservation issues facing Aotearoa, New Zealand. The overarching focus of the roles is to lead, engage and influence on the protection and recovery of aquatic species and ecosystems across freshwater domains.

Your work will help us tackle some big issues, such as freshwater biosecurity and pest management, management of migratory species and how we can effectively leverage relevant legislation to support our work.

Both roles have close links to our biodiversity and operations teams, so you'll have the opportunity to leverage their knowledge to support successful programme implementation. You will also tap into the wider sector stakeholder network and engage with research providers to support the delivery of our work programmes.

Both positions are fast paced, often reactive and require extensive engagement with others. You will partner with Councils, iwi, hapu, whānau as well as with other central and local government agencies and stakeholders to achieve greater conservation outcomes.

**Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako **| Skills and experience**

To make an impact in this position, you will be solution focused and have a passion for the conservation and sustainable management of aquatic species and ecosystems across freshwater domains. Coupled with a strategic mindset and sound operational delivery experience, you will thrive working with a broad stakeholder group to deliver work programmes.

We want to hear from you if you have:

- demonstrated project/ research/ contract management experience
- experience in freshwater ecology, biosecurity, eco-hydrology, wetlands, and/ or management of freshwater species and habitats and knowledge of relevant legislation
- previous experience working with, mentoring, and training peer groups with a freshwater ecology speciality

- strong relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills, including a track record of influencing, negotiating and collaborating with a broad stakeholder group
- tech savvy with excellent written communication and presenting skills
- experience planning, leading, and managing cross-functional projects, meeting timeframes and budgets.

Desirable skills, experience and qualifications:

- experience working in partnership with iwi and understanding of tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori
- tertiary qualification in freshwater ecology or other relevant field
