Graduate / Intermediate Policy Advisor

The Council is supporting a significant programme of work that will ensure it remains a leader in the implementation of the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management. This is a great opportunity to begin your career in policy as a graduate, or to develop your skills as a policy advisor.
**Mō te tūranga | About the role**
- Undertake policy analysis, policy advice, and policy process management.
- Assist and support the development and implementation of policy related to the sustainable management of natural and physical resources.
- Supports and may lead implementation of department work plans and priorities.
- Foster and maintain internal and external relationships with stakeholders and partners, including mana whenua.
- Strengthen internal and external relationships through advising, facilitating, engaging and negotiating where the issues may be complex and unclear.
- Provide policy advice and support to the executive leadership team, councillors, and WRC staff.
- Contributes to the wider project team.
- Graduate Policy Advisor: $65,000 - $75,000
- Intermediate Policy Advisor: $75,000 - $90,000

- Good understanding of policy development.
- Results focused and ability to adapt.
- Excellent communication skills - written and verbal.
- Strategic and tactical thinking skills.
- Understanding of Resource Management Act.
- Political awareness and skill in dealing with sensitive and confidential issues. (including bi-cultural sensitivity)
**Mō ngā pūkenga | Qualifications and experience**
- Relevant degree or post-graduate qualification in planning, engagement, project management, policy, or environmental management.
- RMA, or related policy area/local government experience. 0-2 years for graduate, 2-5 years for intermediate.
- Sound knowledge of policy development, policy process, and policy analysis skills.
- For intermediate level, you will have ideally have experience in writing policy.

- The graduate or intermediate policy advisor will support the water policy team to work on significant policy challenges which make a big difference across the region, and to New Zealand.
- Reporting to the water policy team leader, you will work alongside one intermediate policy advisor and 4 senior policy advisors who will help support and develop you through your career in policy.
