Our vision: Nature is thriving in Aotearoa | Te Oranga o te Ao Tūroa

The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and restore nature across Aotearoa. When nature thrives, we all thrive.

Based in Auckland CBD, this role forms a critical part of the new Auckland Marine District.

This District's focus includes Marine Reserves, Marine Mammal Regulations & the Proposed Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Bill, alongside a varied range of other moana / marine focused conservation activities.

With a wide variety in your tasks, you will collaborate with all workstreams of this District, ensuring that essential planning, delivery and reviews are completed. Your ability to work to critical deadlines while managing multiple tasks will help ensure the success of the entire team.

Key areas of focus for this role include:

  • Community & Advocacy - supporting our seasonal and advocacy ranger program, planning and delivering outreach events and engaging with the public regarding Marine Protection.
  • Critical Logistics – Supporting our Marine Protection Rangers with the management of compliance cases, planning and tracking vessel maintenance and staff training, plus monitoring legislative requirements for operating commercial vessels.
  • Statutory Activities – Advising the Senior Ranger & Operations Manager regarding concessions & permit applications plus monitoring and reporting of existing permissions.

You will be provided with a range of training and skill development, including the DOC Warranted Officer Training Program, enabling you to engage with and resolve compliance situations.

Flexibility in your availability will be highly advantageous, as this role requires you to work weekends and public holidays as required. You will also need the ability to travel and be away from home for multiple days.

You will also need to successfully pass both Police Vetting & Ministry of Justice Checks.

If you have some of the following, we are keen to hear from you:

  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to engage effectively with a wide range of individuals and teams, and resolve conflicts.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with experience in report writing.
  • Outstanding time management skills, including the ability to prioritise and maintain a high level of accuracy while working towards fixed deadlines.
  • A broad understanding of conservation legislation and management and how it contributes to New Zealand's future sustainability.
  • Well-developed sense of cultural awareness, particularly in Te Ao Māori.
  • Flexibility to take on other tasks as reasonably required by DOC, with the ability to adapt to changing needs.
  • Commitment to marine sustainability and Te Papa Atawhai's Kaupapa.
  • Tertiary qualification in conservation or a related area.
  • The ability to communicate in multiple languages, with proficiency in Mandarin, Cantonese and Te Reo Māori being highly desirable.
  • A full NZ Driving Licence, including the ability to drive a manual vehicle.

Even if you don't tick all the boxes but believe your skills and experience closely align, then we still encourage you to apply.

DOC places importance on developing a culture where everyone can participate, thrive, and grow. We're working towards being an organisation that is diverse, equitable and inclusive by default.

Apply online with a CV and cover letter that highlights your relevant skills, experience and motivation for joining Te Papa Atawhai. Please note, due to the high volume of applications, we are unable to accept direct or emailed applications and provide feedback to those not shortlisted.

If you require any accommodations or adjustments throughout the recruitment process, please do let us know.

The salary range for this position is $60,314 to $75,603, with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.

Due to high volumes, we are not engaging with recruitment agencies for this role.
