The Team Manager, Data Systems leads and manages people, plans and processes to provide data stewardship for the Ministry's foundational data systems.


You will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing and acting as the business owner for three of the Ministry's core data systems (National Student Index, ENROL and FIRST).
  • Leading a team of data analysts to ensure high quality and timely data is provided to enable evidencebased decisions.
  • Working with a range of stakeholders to ensure that the data systems and processes meet the Ministry's and education sector's current and future data needs.
  • Overseeing the design, development and implementation of data solutions, systems or products
  • Building and developing a high performing team to deliver on the Ministry's priorities and work programme.

We're looking for a talented people leader who wants to work at the heart of education sector data collections and systems.


You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.


You will also demonstrate:

  • Proven team leadership experience in a data or digital environment
  • Experience delivering a work programme in a complex environment
  • A track record of building strong relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • A sound understanding of the policy and legislation around collecting and sharing data

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau.

To better deliver on this, we are currently undergoing an organisational design change. The transition phase to improve the way we deliver our purpose will be complete in 2023.

The Data and Insights group within Te Pae Aronui | Integration & Operations is centralised point through which information from the sector, communities and takiwā flows into Te Mahau and Te Tāhuhu.

We are responsible for leading the collection, storage, analysis and communication of evidence-based insights and information.
