The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (the Ministry) acts in the world to build a safer, more prosperous and more sustainable future for New Zealanders.

We do this by building connections with and influencing other countries to advance New Zealand's interests, project New Zealand values and secure the outcomes that matter to New Zealand.

We pursue the Government's international priorities and provide advice to the Government on the implications for New Zealand of what is happening in the world.


With over 1,800 staff, based in New Zealand and in 58 overseas posts across 51 countries, we work to enhance New Zealanders' well-being through political, security, economic and development engagement with other countries, participating in multilateral and regional organisations that deal with important issues for New Zealand, and delivering consular services for New Zealanders overseas.

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role


As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will actively contribute to the Ministry's overall objectives, goals, organisational priorities, and culture.

Our DCEP holds overall responsibility for ensuring coherency in Ministry-wide foreign policy positions and this role will see you representing the Ministry in foreign policy discussions both on and offshore.


You will also directly support our Chief Executive in their strategic leadership role, providing a strong "centre" to ensure the Ministry is aligned behind a clear purpose with efficient and effective processes to exchange the Ministry's strategic and operational performance.


You will also lead engagement with the security and intelligence sector, representing the CE on key boards and committees and ensuring that the Ministry's perspectives are integrated into sector processes.

As the ideal appointee, you will have knowledge and experience of the following:

  • Operating and delivering strategic outcomes in the international system, including a track record in offshore diplomatic representation and leadership in promoting and delivering New Zealand's foreign policy objectives.
  • Providing strategic leadership at a senior level in the public sector; private sector experience is also relevant.
  • Leading engagement with Ministers, and in complex central government and interagency processes.
  • People leadership, building collegial teams, developing talent and capability.
  • Driving efficient and effective performance in the Ministry, including through the development of organisational capability and contribution to workplace culture.
