Mō te tūranga | About the role


Looking for a change in vocation and lifestyle? Want to use your skills and knowledge of New Zealand farming systems to advance your career, gain experience in local government, and also make a real difference to the region's environment? This 2-year fixed term role (until 30 June 2025) will work with local catchment groups to support implementation of Freshwater Farm Plans across the Waikato region to improve freshwater quality.

You will coordinate and align activities, both internally and externally, that influence and support the agriculture industry to promote environmental best practice and meet regulatory obligations.

The Primary Sector Engagement Team is looking for someone with working experience in the primary industries and the challenges they face.

The person we're after will have proven success at building relationships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives.


To be successful, you will:

  • Have an understanding of New Zealand farm systems.
  • Have excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills.
  • Be a creative problemsolver and team player.
  • Have experience working in a fastpaced, and at times ambiguous, environment.
  • Have a good understanding of at least one of the following: Farm planning; Farm systems; Water quality; Biodiversity; Behaviour change.

Mō ngā pūkenga | Qualifications and experience

  • A graduate qualification in social science, resource management, physical, environmental, or agricultural science or related field.
  • Ideally, 3+ years relevant experience in a related field or role.

The Primary Sector Engagement Team is a newly formed team in the Resource Use Directorate, focused on building and maintaining trusted relationships to support those in the primary sector to meet their regulatory obligations.

Our aim is to build a diverse team from different backgrounds that respects and values the unique perspectives each member brings to the table, to make a positive change in our region.
