Mercury is a bold future-focused organisation, providing energy and telecommunications to more Kiwi than anyone else, leading the way with renewable energy and working toward a sustainable future.

At the heart is our purpose which pushes us to do all we can to create a better future for our people, our communities, and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Our Opportunity:

Are you looking to further your career in a learning or coaching role with your vast operational knowledge and experience?

We have two permanent opportunities as a Competency Development Specialist with each role focusing on either geothermal or hydro operations.

This role will enable you to shape Mercury's front line operational future by utilising your comprehensive set of skills and qualifications to advance and develop our upcoming operators as they work through their training pathway.

You'll work closely with the power station employees and collaborate with managers across all sites, ensuring key operational safety skills and competencies are the driving force to continuous improvement of Mercury's operational excellence outcomes.

You'll have the opportunity to retain your practical skills by helping the team as required during key maintenance or scheduled work onsite.

Mercury operates a flexible working environment providing you with the autonomy and trust to work flexibly from our purpose-built premises and from home, recognising the value of this flexibility in the modern world.

While this role does require on-site presence, there is the flexibility to work approx. one day per week from home or work a nine-day fortnight (e.g. 9 hours per day across a fortnight).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop, undertake and deliver engaging training & assessment sessions on a variety of topics including plant operations, standard operating procedures, safety process, emergency and first response.
  • Review and ensure training material is up to date to meet competency requirements.
  • Accurately record, audit and manage records of employee training progress and seek out areas for further development.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and training user groups to ensure continuous improvement of training processes and materials.

We are looking for:

  • Extensive experience in a Geothermal or Hydro Operational role or similar.
  • Working knowledge of plant operations, risk management and asset maintenance principles and practices, together with an understanding of power generation plant.
  • Stakeholder management and relationshipbuilding abilities.
  • Strong mentor and coaching skills.
  • Experience working in learning & development, onsite training, or facilitation roles.
  • An understanding/passion for learning and development and future industry trends is desirable but not essential.

Mercury offers (full benefits are listed on our Career Page):

  • Additional 5 days leave per annum (MyDays)
- $400 one off tax-free payment towards setting up your home office

  • A diverse workplace where your unique abilities and talents will be recognised and encouraged
  • Annual salary reviews with excellent parental leave policy, with the option to purchase additional leave
  • The opportunities, career paths and facilities associated with working for one of New Zealand's multi utility providers
  • Discounted health insurance and free life and income insurance
  • Excellent wellbeing programme including up to $100 annual check ups and confidential assistance programme
  • Gender affirmation leave and supportive bereavement leave to be taken when you lose anyone close to you, including your pet
  • Mercury is a learning organisation that is committed to providing you with opportunities to grow and develop that will benefit you now and in the future. Part of your role includes building your skillset and mindset through a variety of ways. We believe this creates an energised, innovative and agile work environment where you will feel valued.
