The Ministerial Relations and Services team provides timely, comprehensive, and tailored Ministerial services, including the release of information to Ministers and Parliament, and responses to parliamentary, customer, and public requests for information.

The Principal Advisor plays a critical role in this team.

The Principal Advisor takes the lead in managing the team's project work, including actions related to the Ombudsman's Official Information Act compliance and practice investigation.

Extensive knowledge of, and experience working with, relevant legislation and machinery of government is essential.


The Principal Advisor will also provide support to the management team and assist in building correspondence capability within the team and across the Ministry.


You must be someone who has a strong service ethic, who takes ownership of their work and drives it through delivery.

The role will require an ability to prioritise and reprioritise a busy, fast paced work programme. You will be comfortable dealing with a reasonable level of ambiguity. You will need to be able to see the bigger picture and make connections across work areas.


The role is highly collaborative and you will need the confidence to develop and manage relationships at all levels across the Ministry.

You will be able to develop trust and credibility with others. You will be a positive role model for others in the team and for our customers across the Ministry.

Part of the Strategy, Governance and Finance group, the Governance and Assurance Business Unit is responsible for maintaining and strengthening the Ministry's system of governance, enabling effective decision making, and providing expert advice and support to the business and the Strategic Leadership Team.

Governance and Assurance is made up of four teams, Ministerial Relations and Services, Governance, Crown Entity Monitoring and Risk and Assurance.

Ministerial Relations and Services primarily works from the Justice Centre in Thorndon, Wellington. Our National Office team role models flexible working arrangements.

- extensive knowledge of Ministerial and Parliamentary processes, and legislation governing access to official information
- expert relationship management skills and the ability to partner effectively with leaders, establishing credibility and trust
- superior written and oral communication skills
- energy to thrive in a fast paced and time bound environment
- a collaborative working style with a focus on providing excellence in your own work, as well as the ability to lead others to shared success
- at least seven years of experience of working in the public service.

Salary Range
The appointing salary for this role will be between $100,221 and $130,876 based on skills and experience.
