As the Director Ministerial Services, you'll be responsible for the provision of high quality analysis and timely advice to the Chief of Defence Force (CDF) in support of CDF's role as the Government's principal military adviser.

You'll provide leadership and oversight of the NZDF's Ministerial Services Team and the Private Secretary to the Minister of Defence and Minister for Veterans.

The Director Ministerial Services is the principal NZDF point of contact with the staffs of the responsible Ministers, the Foreign Affairs Defence and Trade Select Committee (FADTC), the Finance and Expenditure Committee and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet; ensuring requests for information are met, and strong working relationships are maintained.

The Director Ministerial Services directs and oversees the NZDF's adherence to the Official Information Act, and is key to managing the quality and timeliness of Cabinet Papers, Notes to Ministers, and routine reports.

You will be an experienced senior advisor and leader with a thorough and in-depth level of understanding and expertise in the work practices and principles across the broad range of Defence and Security related activities, including a robust understanding of the NZDF and Ministry of Defence organisation and functions, as well as the workings of government.

You'll have a sound understanding of Cabinet, Parliamentary and Central Agency processes, as well as maintaining a high level of political awareness and experience working with senior officials and Ministers of the Crown.


You will also be:

  • Calm under pressure with the ability to respond quickly and effectively in a crisis;
  • An excellent communicator with the ability to articulate complex information clearly and concisely, in both verbal and written form;
  • Able to tailor your briefings to the audience; providing short and sharp briefings to senior officials that cover the key points;
  • A networker who can manage a range of complex relationships with confidence and discretion; and
  • Able to assess risk and prioritise tasks accordingly.

The purpose of the Office of the Chief of Defence Force (OCDF) is to ensure that the Defence Force is working effectively across Headquarters NZDF (HQNZDF) Command and Executive functions along both Service (Army, Navy, Air Force) and Portfolio lines.

The OCDF provides direct advice and support to the Chief of Defence Force (CDF) and the Vice Chief of Defence Force (VCDF) that enables timely and effective decision making.

The OCDF provides further support, advice, direction and coordination across the wider organisation through HQNZDF Service and Portfolio branches.

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force is contributing to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.

Higher level Security Clearance
- most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
- is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
