Manage a technical team overseeing the Learning Information Systems for the NZ Defence College with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF).

This role has a good balance between technical and people facing tasks to help deliver and enhance system user requirements, and ensuring team achieve their required outputs.

Although no day will be the same, responsibilities for this role will include:

  • Maintaining and troubleshooting issues within Learning Information Systems.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders for system user requirements, updates and enhancements.
  • Providing governance on processes and policies, reporting on systems and developing business cases for future change where needed.
  • Managing a small team, including team outputs and performance management.
  • Providing timely solutions for faults or issues that arise through internal stakeholders.
  • Embracing and improving best business practice.


We currently manage legacy systems, so an important aspect of this role will be able to understand what the organisational requirements from both an educational and technological point of view to help bring in new and innovative technology and capabilities to enhance our learning journey.

You will have a technical manager reporting line to a team of professionals located around New Zealand, so domestic travel will be required on occasion.

This role requires a good balance between people, learning and technology, so you will need to have excellent interpersonal skills and a strong understanding of technical learning environments and software.

You will have an open mind when looking for solutions, motivation to keep up with emerging tools and a continuous improvement mind-set to help enhance and develop the systems, team and organisation, as well as yourself.


To be successful in the role, you will also ideally have:

  • Proven experience in an IT field, preferably within an educational and/or training environment.
  • Ability to understand the bigger strategical picture, while also understanding the flow on effects of each action.
  • An understanding of governance, with a good written ability to draft and amend documentation, such as business cases.
  • Ability to manage a small team, work collaboratively and encourage excellence.
  • Excellent relationship management and communication skills, with the confidence to engage and influence at all levels of the organisation.
  • Experience in SAP or similar ERP systems with an understanding of how they integrate with other systems.

Learning Information Systems (LIS guides the use and improvement of the pan-NZDF information systems, which support the processes, management and decision-making, required for the business of learning.

LIS team also provides usage guidelines, user support and training for specific software, and helps NZDC staff with effective information management through shared information systems.
