Te Whakahou i te Mātauranga Ahumahinga, the Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE), is the largest vocational education transformation our generation has seen.

One of the significant milestones is the formation of six new industry-led Workforce Development Councils (WDCs). They enable industry to have a greater leadership role in vocational education.


WDCs form an important part of the new unified vocational education system by ensuring industry has a stronger voice in making Aotearoa's workforce fit for today, and for the future.


The reforms are an opportunity to set up a new system working with Iwi and Maori that prioritises Māori success.

It will support a shift to more culturally responsive teaching and learning, where learners know they are valued.

It is also a chance to make sure there is a much stronger voice for Māori businesses and iwi development.


About the Role:

The Communications and Marketing Advisor will work with the Communications and Marketing Manager and the rest of Hanga-Aro-Rau to deliver innovative, high-quality and effective communications, marketing, media and industry engagement material to support the achievement of Hanga-Aro-Rau priorities and objectives.


The purpose of this role is to use quality marketing and communications to build trusted relationships and partnerships between Hanga-Aro-Rau and industry, iwi and hapū, Te Tiriti partners, learners and their whānau, and across the workforce development landscape.

You will also build strong relationships across the Hanga-Aro-Rau tīma and produce internal communications across a variety of channels.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the delivery of onbrand communications, media, marketing, events, and social media activities to connect Hanga-AroRau to our wide array of audiences internal and external.
  • Monitor, analyse and utilise dataled insights to guide recommendations for external marketing and communications performance against strategic business priorities and objectives.
  • Ensure alignment of the Hanga-AroRau portfolio of marketing and communications activities with our evolving brand and contribute to its development.
  • Collaborate across WDCs to contribute to a strong and connected approach to messaging, presentation and engagement materials while elevating the unique nature and work of Hanga-AroRau
  • Support projects, collaborate crossfunctionally and with suppliers to deliver on time and to objectives.

Key requirements:

  • Fluency (or actively on the learning journey towards fluency) in te reo Māori, both written and spoken, and excellent understanding of tikanga Māori and te ao Māori
  • Excellent writing skills with experience writing for different audiences, including internal using plain language and making things accessible.
  • A good understanding of marketing and communications principles and their implementation
  • A professional, positive, flexible and diplomatic approach to problemsolving
  • Expertise in managing multiple channels and conflicting priorities
  • Strong planning and organisational skills

Te Tiriti o Waitangi

  • Understand Te Tiriti o Waitangi and supports capability building across the Workforce Development Councils
  • Work with Te Tiriti o Waitangi partners to codesign functions and activities and influence, engage and embed initiatives across the system
  • Ensuring that the work is informed and agreed by our partners and we meet their reporting requirements
  • Demonstrate how your work supports Māori-Crown relationships
  • Influence positive behaviours within industries and employers to impact success for Māori in the vocational education system.
