Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role

The Adviser's primary role is to support the functioning of the Ministerial Advisory Committees for animal welfare, the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee and the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee.

In addition, the role is to provide work programme, project and technical support to the Manager Animal Welfare Science for the development, review and implementation of animal welfare standards.

The Adviser is an integral part of the team responsible for providing advice on good practice relevant to the physical, health and behavioural needs of animals.

The role is responsible for working across MPI, the Ministerial Advisory Committees, other stakeholders and the Animal Welfare Science Team to meet the expectations of New Zealand society for the welfare and humane treatment of animals.

This role is integral to maintaining New Zealand's international standing for the care of animals and reputation as a responsible agricultural producer.

Animal welfare issues are complex and you will need to be sensitive to the views of all parties when developing policies and standards.

To be successful in this role you will have the following skills and attributes:

  • Desirable to have experience with animals in an animal or animal welfare related field
  • Selfmotivated with exceptional organisational skills, able to set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Methodical approach to problem solving with good attention to detail
  • Broad knowledge of the New Zealand regulatory environment and Animal Welfare Act 199
  • Secretariat experience and/or experience in managing relationships and consultation with an assortment of external stakeholders
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with people from all levels of an organisation
