National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee vacancy

There is currently one vacancy for a Ministerial appointee to the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC).

Nominations are also being sought from relevant organisations.

NAWAC is established under the Animal Welfare Act 1999 to advise the Minister on:

  • the welfare of animals in New Zealand
- animal welfare research needs
- legislative proposals
- codes of welfare
- regulations
- traps and devices
- hunting and killing animals in a wild state.

Appointments are made, for a maximum term of three years, by the Minister of Agriculture, who is required to ensure that the committee has knowledge and experience in certain relevant areas.

There are at least four meetings a year, usually but not exclusively in Wellington, and members are expected to commit to working groups and subcommittees depending on expertise and availability.

It is anticipated that there would be a day's preparation required for each meeting plus additional time for involvement in subcommittee work.

This is not a salaried position.

Appointees are entitled to reimbursement of travelling expenses and a daily fee of $400 for meeting attendance and meeting preparation in accordance with Cabinet guidelines.

Applicants must be New Zealand residents and are required to supply contact details for two referees. Applicants will be required to complete a conflicts of interest disclosure and may undergo a Police check.

Current MPI employees are ineligible for appointment to NAWAC.

Applications close on 23 May 2023.
