The Policy team sits under the umbrella of the System Leadership group. The group collects insights for evidence-based decision making and leads the development of strategy, policy, business planning, and performance.

Principal Policy Analyst - Oranga Tamariki Royal Commission Response

This role is to lead the policy advice, and support the Oranga Tamariki response, to the findings and recommendations of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Abuse of Children in State Care (the Royal Commission).

We are seeking an experienced Principal Analyst who has the strategic aptitude, relationship management skills, resilience, sensitivity, and confidence to take a lead role in the policy and cross agency work to respond to the Royal Commission.

You will work closely with internal stakeholders and other participating agencies.

You will be a quick and critical thinker that's able to work across the organisation, identify opportunities and issues, and support consensus building on preferred options for change to improve outcomes.

Ideally you will have worked in a challenging environment and on complex and sensitive issues and know how to work carefully considering the wellbeing of victims and survivors, and personal wellbeing.


Key requirements of the role include but not limited to:

  • Excellent relationship management skills and an ability to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships at all levels, with ministers and with external stakeholders
  • Ability to take the key themes and issues arising from the Royal Commission and understand the implications for the organisation, and how they intersect with other agencies and organisations
  • Ability to understand, synthesise and communicate complex ideas to a variety of audiences, including senior leaders, ministers, other agencies and external stakeholders
  • Understanding and appreciation of crosscultural practices in particular; knowledge of tikanga Māori, and Pacific peoples' culture
  • Ability to undertake policy analysis and deliver advice on complex policy problems that stretch throughout an organisation and across government
  • Participation in cross agency initiatives and working groups to enable Oranga Tamariki to effective support and respond to the Royal Commission supporting the effective operation of the Inquiry
