The Chief Ombudsman works with his staff to help people in their dealings with government agencies. The focus is on handling complaints against government agencies, undertaking investigations and inspections, and encouraging good administration. The Chief Ombudsman is independent and impartial, with the goal of fairness for all.
Mō tō mātou tira - About the team

The Children in Care Complaints team was formed in 2018 in response to an identified need for stronger oversight of the Oranga Tamariki system.

This team handles all Ombudsmen Act and Official Information Act complaints relating to those in the Oranga Tamariki system.

The work is challenging, but incredibly meaningful, making a real difference to the lives of children/tamariki, young people/rangatahi, and family/whānau around New Zealand.

Mō te tūranga - About the role

Investigators are responsible for all stages of complaints handling from providing initial assistance and seeking early resolution, through to planning and undertaking complex investigations with multiple stakeholders.

As an Investigator the work you will carry out will present challenges and require the ability to be adaptable and resilient.

In addition, you will need to take particular care to ensure the work you do recognises and responds to the crucial importance of youth and Māori engagement.

You can expect your work to be challenging, but incredibly meaningful, making a real difference to the lives of whānau and children around New Zealand.

We are recruiting for two roles - one permanent and one 12 month fixed term. Please state in your cover letter if you have a preference.
He kōrero mōu - About you

To be successful in this role, ideally you will have:

  • A comfortable level of proficiency in Te Reo Māori and/or an enhanced understanding of Tikanga and Mātauranga Māori.
  • Ability to maintain independence and objectivity, and demonstrate the utmost discretion and resilience in dealing with high profile and often very sensitive issues.
  • Proven ability to deal with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure and remain calm and focused when dealing with aggrieved parties.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification or experience in a relevant field.
  • Experience in one or more of these areas;
  • Experience working with tamariki and their whānau;
  • Experience in carrying out complaint handling, investigation and/or resolution activities;
  • Experience in the practice and procedure in central/local government or in the wider public sector.

The programme includes partnership with a trainer who will provide ongoing support and mentoring.
