The IPCA is an Independent Crown Entity established by the IPCA Act to investigate and resolve complaints against the Police.

The IPCA receives and investigates complaints alleging misconduct or neglect of duty by Police employees, or concerning any practice, policy, or procedure of the Police.

The IPCA also investigates incidents where a Police employee causes, or appears to have caused, death or serious bodily harm.

The IPCA also has responsibility for monitoring and reporting on Police custodial facilities as a National Preventive Mechanism under the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT).

We are looking for an Investigator to assist us to conduct independent investigations into complaints against the Police and incidents where death or serious bodily harm has occurred and manage the oversight of Police investigations into complaints where considered necessary.

You will be involved in a variety of investigation activities including liaison with key stakeholders involved in the investigation, information gathering and analysis, planning and conducting investigation interviews and writing reports and other related communications.

You may also be involved in supporting broader project work as required.
In this position you may need to work outside normal business hours and will need to travel as required.

You'll be part of small, friendly organisation which prides itself on working diligently, working with integrity and ensuring that people who come to IPCA for assistance are provided an excellent and fair service.

To be successful in this role you'll need to have experience in an investigations position along with the following:

  • strong interviewing experience
- knowledge or experience in the functions of law enforcement agencies
- cultural awareness and recognition of the Treaty of Waitangi as New Zealand's founding document
- demonstrated planning/project management skills
- excellent communications skills
- strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- demonstrated ability to write high quality plain English reports
- well-developed relationship management skills and the ability to manage difficult and sensitive situations
- strong EQ and effective strategies to maintain resilience
- attention to detail and strong organisation skills.

Legal knowledge and/or a tertiary qualification are desirable along with formal training in investigations methodology.
