The Bay of Plenty Youth Development Trust (BOPYDT), established in 2017, empowers young people in Tauranga by supporting their educational, social, and physical development. Operating from a large purpose-built facility in the heart of Tauranga CBD, the Trust delivers values-based fitness programmes that build discipline, confidence, and leadership, while connecting youth with positive role models and mentors. Beyond the gym, BOPYDT encourages young people to engage in community activities, helping them strengthen self-esteem, broaden their horizons, and make a positive impact in the Bay of Plenty.

We are privileged to be partnering with the BOPYDT to recruit a newly created General Manager role. This pivotal role will provide strong values driven leadership, execute strategy, foster a culture aligned with the Trust's vision and values, and ensure sustainable financial and operational management. By championing the voices of young people, particularly Māori and Pasifika, this role will drive innovation, advocacy, and collaboration to create lasting positive outcomes for youth and their communities.

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Provide values-based leadership, supporting and developing staff.
  • Foster a culture of engagement, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Work alongside the Chairman and Board to develop and deliver effective strategy and ensure strong governance and compliance.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with iwi, schools, funders, government, and community partners.
  • Represent the Trust as a visible advocate for youth development locally and nationally.
  • Oversee budgets, funding, and resources to ensure sustainability and accountability.
  • Deliver on KPIs and outcomes aligned with strategic and funder priorities.
  • Lead innovative, culturally responsive programmes that empower rangatahi and deliver measurable outcomes.

The background we are looking for includes:

  • 5+ years' general management experience.
  • Excellent people management and leadership experience and skills.
  • Experience creating a supportive, caring environment while providing steady, empathetic organisational leadership.
  • Ideally, experience working with youth and understanding the challenges they face (not essential).
  • Experience in meeting the requirements of public sector governance and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and build strong networks across all levels.
  • Experience leading a multicultural social services or educational organisation would be advantageous but not essential.
