The Oke Charity Board Chair

Oke Charity - Leading with Purpose, Innovation, and Heart

About the Oke Charity

At Oke Charity, our mission is to cultivate a love for learning and healthy living in children by building outdoor classrooms throughout Aotearoa. We believe that every child should have access to a classroom which enables them to learn, thrive and grow.

Through our work, we aim to inspire and educate our tamariki on the importance of sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. We strive to create safe and nurturing outdoor spaces where children can connect with nature, develop life skills, and build meaningful relationships with their peers.

The Role

The Chair of the Oke Charity Board is a guardian of Oke's mission, the conductor of collaboration, and the strategic anchor ensuring that Oke thrives for generations to come.

Unlike traditional chair roles that collect titles, this is a position of focus, accountability, and innovation, dedicated exclusively to helping Oke become a recognisable and financially sustainable charitable force for good.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mission Guardian - Ensure every decision aligns with Oke's purpose, values, and commitment to empowering children and communities.
  • Inclusive Governance - Lead a diverse, engaged board with transparency, empathy, and a shared sense of purpose.
  • Good EGG (CEO) Partnership - Act as a trusted, collaborative partner to the CEO, balancing support, challenge, and accountability.
  • Strategic Stewardship - Drive long-term strategic planning with a future-focused lens on growth, innovation, and measurable community impact.
  • Financial Sustainability - Champion Oke's journey toward long-term financial independence by developing and overseeing sustainable funding models (including social enterprise, partnerships, and philanthropy).
  • Community Connector - Amplify Oke's profile nationally, building relationships with funders, partners, and champions of our cause.
  • Board Development - Nurture and mentor board members, cultivating diverse leadership talent and governance capability.
  • Integrity & Accountability - Uphold the highest ethical standards while modelling openness, inclusion, and trust.
  • Wellbeing Focus - Foster a culture that values people, ensuring the wellbeing of leadership, staff, and volunteers alongside organisational health.

Qualities of The Queen Bee

  • Future-Focused - Courageous, visionary, and adaptive to change.
  • Mission-Driven - Holds a singular commitment to Oke.
  • Financially Savvy - Understands how to build resilient, diversified income streams and drive sustainable growth.
  • Equity-Minded - Champions inclusion and ensures the board reflects the communities Oke serves.
  • Connector & Storyteller - Inspires trust across sectors and can elevate Oke's voice nationally.
  • Resilient & Ethical - Navigates complexity with integrity and calm leadership.
  • Mentor & Cultivator - Sees governance as a shared journey of growth, not personal prestige.

Commitment

  • Term: 3 years (renewable once)
  • Time: Approximately 6–9 hours per month, including strategy sessions, events, and board meetings
  • Exclusivity: This is a focused leadership role, the Chair commits to not holding another active charity chair position during their tenure with Oke.
  • Compensation: Voluntary (reasonable expenses reimbursed)

Our Commitment to Equity and Inclusion

Oke Charity is proud to be an equal opportunity organisation. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all.

We strongly encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences, especially those traditionally underrepresented in leadership roles.
