Summer Policy Intern

**Tēnei tūranga - About the role**

The Policy Summer Intern is a team member position with an experience and development focus. This position is

designed to provide learning opportunities to build understanding of policy work as a foundation to a career in

the public service.

The Policy Summer Intern assists with policy activities such as research, analysis and delivery of new projects and

programmes.

**Personal specifications**

› All employees are required to comply with MBIE’s vaccination policy which seeks to protect the wellbeing,

health and safety of our people, their whānau and the community. You are required to hold a valid vaccination

pass to be employed at MBIE.

› Must have the ability to legally live and work in New Zealand.

**Takohanga tuhinga o mua - Key accountabilities and deliverables**

**Policy activities and tasks**

› Contributes to drafts of policy advice, analysis and briefing, including formal messages, briefs, submissions,

cabinet papers and speech notes.

› Assist in gathering, interpreting, and summarising relevant information and evidence.

› Support engagement with delivery agencies and internal and external stakeholders and other government

agencies.

› Assist with preparing policy advice papers that are clear, accurate, well-reasoned and are targeted to the

audience.

› Perform more routine, lower risk or lower sensitivity policy tasks.

› Prepare or contribute to draft Ministerial and reports as requested.

› Working with the policy team to identify and develop key policy areas.

**Work management**

› Works with close guidance and supervision.

› Assists project leaders with project planning and project management by contributing deliverables on time and

keeping abreast of project milestones and interdependencies.

› Manages own workload with assistance from Manager or more senior Policy Advisor.

**Capability development**

› Take responsibility for own development and learning on‐the
- job.

› Pick up on small independent tasks.

› Understanding of the machinery of Government and demonstrated knowledge of political administrative

processes and structures.

**Wellbeing, health & safety**

› Displays commitment through actively supporting all safety and wellbeing initiatives.

› Ensures own and others safety at all times.

› Complies with relevant safety and wellbeing policies, procedures, safe systems of work and event reporting.

› Reports all incidents/accidents, including near misses in a timely fashion.

› Is involved in health and safety through participation and consultation.
