The functioning of the labour market plays a key role in improving employment, social, and economic outcomes in New Zealand.
The Skills and Employment Policy team advises the Minister for Social Development and Employment on strategic advice related to the labour market. The team provides overarching market analysis, advice, and leadership on MBIE and cross-agency work on labour market performance and dynamics. We support New Zealanders to develop skills to engage in meaningful employment and employers to access the skills they need to grow. We work closely with a range of other agencies and external stakeholders, including across government, unions, and business.
The Skills and Employment Policy Team works across MBIE and partner agencies within government to provide analysis and advice on cross-system labour market issues, including:

- the overall effectiveness of the labour market and
- advice on the Government’s Employment Strategy, which provides strategic direction for the Government’s approach to the labour market and objectives improve employment outcomes for all New Zealanders
- development and delivery of the population focussed Employment Action Plans that are targeted to support the most disadvantaged groups and make our labour market more inclusive
- ways to support better labour market matching and skills supply in occupations, sectors and regions.

- Influence and lead others.

They use their strong communication skills to engage and work collaboratively with various groups. They bring a base knowledge of public policy as well as an understanding of the machinery of government, Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, to better position New Zealand for the future.

Our Policy Advisors work across different levels to learn from experts and build their own knowledge. With the wide variety of work across the different policy areas, there are numerous opportunities to develop their policy craft and build their careers within MBIE.

We are looking for motivated people with some experience in problem solving problems and formulating high-quality policy advice for a range of stakeholders and projects.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Have a good base of experience in public policy as a Policy Advisor and/or transferrable skills from an advisory, legal or similar role
- Be a logical thinker, problem solver and a healthy level of curiosity
- Bring knowledge of policy development disciplines and processes
- Enjoy working on complex problems, generating ideas and coming up with solutions
- Have the ability to build relationships with others and work collaboratively
