We are looking for someone to join our dynamic Public Health team who values and is committed to Mātauranga Māori, Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori intelligence.

Writing, promoting and advocating for health, wellbeing and equity in all policies, is a Public Health role, which is vital to achieving Pae Ora or healthy futures for Māori and other priority populations in the Waikato. The health system, along with the wider socioeconomic, cultural and environmental factors, deemed the social determinants of health (SDHs) play a significant role in the total wellbeing of individuals, families/whānau and communities/hapū. Health Equity in All Policies (HEiAPs) is an approach that recognises the role policy makers have in integrating health, wellbeing and equity in all policy agendas across sectors, institutions and organisations.

As part of the team, the responsibilities of this role are to:

- Lead and direct the day-to-day healthy policy work of the National Public Health Service, Waikato.
- Develop and build capacity to advocate for equity awareness, development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation/outcomes in Public Health policy within and outside of Te Whatu Ora Waikato.
- Analyse new and existing policy with a Te Tiriti o Waitangi and health equity focus to ensure that Public Health initiates, reacts, and responds to both optimise individual, community, and system health gains and mitigate potential negative impacts on health. These include but are not limited to central and local government; Iwi Māori, Pacific, and local providers; and community organisations.

The public health sector is under transformation to serve more effectively whānau and community. Informed in the first instance by Tiriti o Waitangi, Pae Tū: Hauora Māori Strategy, and _Hauora_ the Waitangi Tribunal WAI 2575 Stage One Report, policy development will draw on Māori models of health. For example, Te Pae Mahutonga, Te Whare Tapa Whā and Te Wheke to acknowledge a broader definition of health (as hauora/ oranga) and highlight the importance of considering all dimensions that contribute towards individual, whānau, hapū, community and population well-being.

**Mōu | About you**

The Public Health Service is looking for a suitably qualified and experienced person to work in the Policy Team. We welcome applicants for this position who have:

- Understanding of Mātauranga Māori and Tikanga
- Connections with Iwi Māori, Pasifika and/or Whaikaha communities
- Ability to understand/communicate in te reo Māori or Pasifika languages
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to negotiate with and be accepting of people and processes
- Excellent inter-cultural, oral, and written communication skills
- Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it is applied to policy work to achieve equity, justice and fairness for Māori in health and with Intersectoral partners
- Three to five years’ experience in public health, and/or Iwi, Non-Government health/social service organisations, or related field such as local government policy roles
- Ability to recognise equity achievements, gaps, and barriers in health and other policies so that whānau Māori and other priority populations experience equitable voice, access, quality, and health outcomes
- In-depth understanding of the healthy public policy /Health in all policies (HiAP) approach, the wider determinants of health and a focus on reducing inequities
- Understands public health service delivery with good knowledge of social determinants and their effect on health status
- Critical, Strategic thinking and foresight
- Analytical ability to interpret information and provide written reports
- Enthusiasm and humour
- Creative thinker who is self-motivated and able to prioritise objectives
