Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
The Director, Māori Health will be jointly appointed by the National Director, Commissioning and the Deputy Chief Executive, Service Development in Te Aka Whai Ora. This reflects the partnership between Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora and the significance of the role to guide, support and drive equitable outcomes for Māori. The Director, Māori Health ensures all work reflects these responsibilities and aligns to Te Aka Whai Ora's whānau outcomes framework.
This role will provide the National Commissioning team with strategic advice and be an important connector with Te Aka Whai Ora aspirations and goals for whānau. This role will be key in ensuring that the needs of Māori are at the forefront of design, planning and implementation of the work undertaken by the Commissioning team. At a strategic level this will include working with the National Director, Commissioning to establish the new operating model for this group.
Your mahi will see you working closely with the National Director and four Regional Wayfinders to implement an integrated approach to Māori health issues across the motu. Trusted relationships with whānau, iwi and communities will be vital in this role
- as you co-lead a programme of work with Te Aka Whai Ora.
This is a role that will see you meaningfully accelerate Māori health gains, and be part of the shift to a model of patient and whānau led support. A key project this role will support is implementing and sustaining the delivery of tikanga training that improves the cultural responsiveness of staff in Tāmaki Makaurau, in collaboration with other leaders.
Mōu | About you
You are an experienced health or community sector leader, who sees the world through a te ao Māori lens. Your values exemplify wairuatanga, rangatiratanga, whanaungatanga and te korowai manaaki.
Your leadership journey has seen you work in complex organisations, and you have experience leading change by respectfully challenging the status quo and continuously improving processes and outcomes. Ideally you have knowledge or experience in general health industry trends, including issues and challenges for Māori health improvement. You have an innovative approach to fostering Māori leadership within an organisation, and by collaborating with communities.
You are confident that you will be able to build and nurture genuine relationships of partnership and trust with iwi, community groups, Te Aka Whai Ora colleagues and senior leaders. These relationships will allow you to ensure that initiatives to promote Māori health gain are evidence-based, prioritised and systematically measured and evaluated.

- Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
- Demonsrated leadership experience at a senior level, over multiple roles. This will Include time in large and complex organisations concerned with health-related services and/or service delivery to Māori.
- Ample evidence of your previous successes in establishing and nurturing relationships and teams
