**Job Description**:
**Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity**

Plan and perform experiments related to “**Self-assembling high value devices through biomimicry**” the research project that is supporting this position. This will involve, preparing experiments, collecting, and analysing data, and produce outputs including writing manuscripts for publication based on the results of the research. The position will be responsible for delivering on the objectives as found in the research project description as below:
Nature is able to make and recycle a vast range of materials from a limited set of building blocks. By studying, observing, and mimicking natural systems, we aim to discover scalable strategies for future material design.

Proteins are able to adapt their shape, structure, and function in response to their environment. For example, airborne fungi are protected by a hydrophobic protein layer that renders the spores resistant to wetting and desiccation layer. The layer consists of tightly packed nanoscale protein rodlets, that are produced through self-assembly of hydrophobin protein monomers.

In an _in vitro_ environment, many proteins, including hydrophobins, can be controllably assembled. While the native self-assembly properties of proteins are exploited towards this goal, there often remains a challenge in the spatial arrangement of protein molecules of scaffolds on a surface - particularly over a relatively large area. Protein crystals have a high degree of order in 4 dimensions and crystallographic superlattices formed from protein motifs have been identified as a source of new materials with diverse chemical and structural properties.

This project will involve:

- Developing protocols for the expression, extraction and self-assembly of biomolecules. This will include hydrophobins, along with proteins known to readily crystalize such as lysozyme and carbonic anhydrase.
- Understanding the self-assembly behaviour of biomolecules in response to environmental stimuli (e.g. air/liquid interfaces, pH and solvent conditions)
- Characterisation of emerging properties of assemblies

This is a fulltime (40 hours per week), 23-month fixed term position
Remuneration: RF3-RF7; $92,620 - $103,904

For more detailed information, please refer to the Position Description.

**He kōrero mōu | About you**

Our ideal applicant will have a conferred PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Engineering, with experience in materials assembly and characterisation techniques as well as a strong track record of high impact research in a relevant field to the research project, ideally in high impact journal articles as the first or corresponding author.
