About the role / Te āhuatunga a te tūranga
The Strategy and Inquiries Policy Team is responsible for supporting MSD's policy response to a number of external inquiries, including the Waitangi Tribunal Kaupapa Inquiry programme, the Royal Commissions of Inquiry into Abuse in Care and the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Covid 19 Lessons.
MSD fully supports the work of these inquiries, and an important part of our work is to understand what lessons can be learnt in order to deliver stronger Te Tiriti-based, whānau and people centred policy advice. The team performs a range of functions including:

- Working with other parts of MSD and across government to respond to these various inquiries so that they can undertake their work,
- considering proactively how MSD can respond to inquiry recommendations and building an appropriate policy work programme
- analysing the inputs and outputs of the inquiries and working to ensure this knowledge is incorporated into current and future policy analysis and advice
- advising senior government leaders and Ministers.

As Policy Manager, you will be responsible for leading a small team of policy and advisor staff. Your role will be to work with key internal and external stakeholders to develop the strategic direction of the work programme and ensure the team delivers timely and quality policy advice. The work programme will contribute to the broader objectives of the Policy Branch, the work of the Ministry and the priorities of Government.
You will develop and maximise the capability of your team members, providing them with opportunities to grow their skills, knowledge and confidence. You and your team will have the professional support of Principal Policy Analysts to ensure the work is of a high standard and complex processes or strategic issues are well managed.

Skills and experience / He pūkenga tou
- Experience leading in a strategic policy environment, excellent judgement
- Skilled relationships building and influencing across a variety of stakeholders
- Experience leading policy projects and producing quality policy advice
- Leadership experience including supporting the performance of individuals and the quality of policy work through mentoring, quality assurance processes and coaching
- Building high performing teams, with a focus on fostering a supportive team culture
- Comfortable and effective when working closely with senior leaders including Ministers, Chief Executives and Deputy Chief Executives
- An appropriate tertiary qualification or considerable, relevant practical experience
