**Horopaki | Context**:
It is an exciting time for us at Te Kaunihera Taiao ki Waitaha | Environment Canterbury as we build our capability and capacity to deliver Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership excellence.
We are on a journey to build our organisational and individual capability to ensure we deliver our work through a Ngāi Tahu lens, to change the way we think, interact, and work with Ngā Papatipu Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, and ensure our values, behaviours, attitudes, and actions reflect kaupapa Māori. We have an ambitious work programme, including reviewing our Regional Policy Statement, Land and Water Plan and Coastal Environment Plan to achieve national direction and deliver an integrated Ki Uta Ki Tai Plan in partnership with Ngāi Tahu as mana whenua of Waitaha.
**Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role**:
As the Principal Strategy Advisor, you’ll drive the development of kaupapa Māori policy advice for the organisation. Your advice will enable us to give effect to national policy requirements and provide strategic policy leadership across all Council functions.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of something new and exciting - to share your talents and experience to ensure a Ngāi Tahu perspective is applied to environmental management and support functions in Waitaha Canterbury.
You’ll lead the development and provision of high-quality strategic policy advice in response to national policy direction and aligned with the values and expectations of mana whenua. This will include providing strategic, operational and tactical oversight across kaupapa Māori provisions of relevant resource management legislation and particularly the National Policy Statement on Freshwater Management (NPS-FM).
**Mōhou About You**
You’ll have a strong understanding of, or be actively increasing your capability in, te reo me ōna tikanga Māori. You’ll be a confident communicator, exercise diplomacy and discretion and be at ease persuading and influencing outcomes.
You’re driven, can work independently, and love to achieve targets and goals.
Overall, you will be driven to make a difference, excited about the work we do and think you would fit well with our culture, values, and busy team.
**More about you**:
- At least eight years’ demonstrated experience in ngā kaupapa Māori policy development and resource management.
- Experience working with Ngāi Tahu, and/or an active commitment to upholding the values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by mana whenua, Ngāi Tahu. A commitment to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and experience incorporating whānau, hapū and iwi Māori perspectives into work programmes.
- Strong networking, influencing and relationship building skills are critical to this role along with a proven ability to bring together diverse groups with multiple stakeholders in complex or sensitive situations to reach desired conclusions and outcomes.
- Demonstrated strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong written skills and experience in providing advice in plain English.
**Ngā hua o te Mahi i te Kaunihera Taiao ki Waitaha** | **Working at Environment Canterbury**
Our mission is to work in partnership with Ngāi Tahu, the community, taking action together to shape a thriving and resilient Waitaha Canterbury, now and for future generations - Toitū te marae o Tāne, Toitū te marae o Tangaroa, Toitū te iwi.
Our values underpin everything we do. We understand and embrace a diverse workforce; this diversity will enable us to better serve our people, our community, and our greatest taonga, the environment. We value everyone’s contribution, diverse thinking, and skills.
We're on a journey to become a treaty partner of excellence, including incorporating te ao Māori into our work. We offer supportive opportunities to develop capability in this area and encourage our people to use kaupapa Māori, mātauranga Māori and te reo Māori in our daily work. We welcome you with an open heart & mind, wherever you are on your personal te ao Māori journey.
