Like cities all around the world, Ōtautahi Christchurch is grappling with the realities of climate change. Council and communities need access to the best information possible to understand the nature of multi-hazard climate risk to our assets, places, spaces, and wellbeing.

The Principal Advisor - Climate Risk will sit within the Council's Coastal Hazards Adaptation Planning team which works with communities and rūnanga to plan for the impacts of sea level rise. In addition to this focus on coastal adaptation, the team is responsible for building a greater understanding of climate risk across all climate hazards.

**About the role**:
As the Principal Advisor - Climate Risk you will be responsible for understanding the information needs of asset owners, planning and policy staff which will inform development of a cross-Council climate risk screening strategy. This strategy informs adaptation planning, responds to the needs of asset owners, and provides for public-facing reporting.

A key responsibility will be oversight of the development of the Council's Risk Explorer which is a geospatial tool that assesses the vulnerability of assets to hazards. As a newly created role there is an opportunity to shape the direction of climate risk screening at Council and bring elements of innovation to the work programme.

In addition to the core purpose of the role, the Principal Advisor - Climate Risk will provide expert advice and guidance to teams across Council as well as partner organisations.

**About you**:
To be successful in this role you will have:

- Minimum 10 years' experience in a hazards related role, with at least 7 years in a senior position
- An earth sciences qualification, ideally at Masters level.
- Experience in risk screening and assessment.
- Experience in local government working with asset owners and communities is desirable.
- The ability to establish good relationships and to communicate climate science to non-technical audiences with energy, clarity, and enthusiasm both in person and in written documents.
