This newly established role will involve the primary responsibility of developing and managing the NZHPA personal development programme to engage, support and empower international hockey players to drive their personal and professional development while also catering for their overall health and wellbeing.

This role will be primarily responsible for the discovery, formation and delivery of a proactive personal development programme that supports players to build their non-sporting identity and career alongside and beyond hockey.

The content of the programme will be created with input from the playing group and consultation with Hockey NZ and based upon best practice from other sporting personal development programmes.

The role will work with men and women Black Sticks contracted players that are based in New Zealand or overseas, and to support those players who have recently transitioned in or out of the Black Sticks team environment.

**EY TASKS**:
1. Manage the overall strategic direction and management of the Personal Development Program, including:

- Design programme content and support with players and relevant stakeholders
- Implementing and promoting wellbeing outcomes for players
- Developing the key content priorities across the programme.
- Managing the annual personal development budget
- Allow the program to take shape and increase awareness of the value and importance of the program
- Attend meetings and personal development conferences to gain knowledge, up-skill and to enhance the programme
- Create effective working relationships with all stakeholders, including Hockey NZ

2. Work with the men and women Black Sticks contracted players on an individual basis to support and guide each player’s personal and professional development.

3. Provide transitional guidance and assistance for players on an as needs basis in the following instances:

- Entry into the international hockey environment
- Exit from the international hockey environments.

4. Develop and maintain a professional and reputable network of external providers who can be called on to provide tailored and on-going support to players as required.

**IDEAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE**:

- Outstanding ability to build rapport and develop trusted relationships with players and to build broad networks to enrich the PD programme.
- Experience in the professional management of challenging well-being issues would be invaluable.
- Empathetic with strong influencing and advocacy skills.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Relevant qualification and/or experience within the sectors of human resources, teaching/education, psychology, business or management/leadership is preferred.
- An understanding of career development (including recruitment or outplacement), learning or education would be advantageous.
- An understanding of financial management including tax, insurance and ACC is helpful.
- Experience working in an autonomous role (self-starter).
- An appreciation of the pressures of a high performance (sports) environment is desirable but not essential.

**ABOUT NZHPA**:
The NZHPA was established in 2006 and is the representative organisation for New Zealand’s international hockey players - both current and past. Our primary function includes the negotiation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hockey NZ, which determines the contractual framework between players and the governing body. The personal development programme is being established following agreement within the MOU, as a key emphasis on player wellbeing in the wider high-performance hockey environment.

The programme’s development marks a conscious effort by NZHPA to provide its members with a trusted programme that prioritises each player’s personal development. The programme is being designed by NZHPA members for their own benefit and one which facilitates their personal growth as an advantage of being involved with hockey at the elite level.
