Who are we?

The Meat Industry Association (MIA) is looking for a professional, high-functioning advocacy and strategy manager to join our small Wellington-based team. The Association is a voluntary trade body that represents sheep and beef processors, marketers and exporters – the second largest goods export industry in New Zealand. We advocate on behalf of our members on a wide range of post-farm gate issues and provide a strong voice for a vibrant, sustainable, and profitable industry.

Why work for us?

Sitting at the intersection of international trade, manufacturing, and livestock agriculture, MIA offers the right candidate a unique opportunity to shape the future of New Zealand's most significant value-add export industry. You will work with a brilliant team of self-motivated and independent policy specialists from across a range of disciplines. Focussed on outcomes, not inputs, we value and prioritise a team delivery culture as an enabler of success.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

  • To advise and assist the Chief Executive in managing the governance and operational affairs of the Association.
  • To play a key role in maintaining liaison between the meat industry and relevant government departments and other organisations whose policies and activities have an impact on the industry.
  • To play a key role in developing and delivering an advocacy and communications strategy with key stakeholder to position the industry for on-going success.
  • To provide advice, analysis, and advocacy on major issues and proposals that could impact on the profitability and productivity of the export meat industry.
  • To assess the reputational standing of MIA among key internal and external stakeholders, and improve this in the eyes of members, partners, stakeholders, decision-makers, the media and the wider public.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Have previous experience in public relations, government relations, media, stakeholder relations and communications.
  • Be someone who shows a lot of initiative, energy and is comfortable working autonomously and can work under pressure at busy times.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and a keen eye for detail coupled with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Have a superior ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with people at all levels both internally and externally.
  • Have an ability to support the members of a small, busy and highly professional team to deliver optimal performance.
  • Have high level conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to think laterally, critically assess issues, problem solve, use initiative, and display sound judgement.
  • Have the ability to write well across a range of channels and audiences.
  • Have knowledge of and experience in dealing with government officials and Ministerial staff.
