About the organisation:
Local Government New Zealand's (LGNZ) vision is to create the most active and inclusive local democracy in the world. To achieve that, they champion, connect and support local government.

LGNZ represents the national interest of councils across New Zealand, advocates for local government on critical issues, decodes policy, makes submissions and develops thought leadership. They connect members through networks, sector events and a must-attend annual conference that brings everyone together, as well as promoting best practice.

About the role:
Reporting to the Chief Executive, and as a critical member of a close-knit Leadership Team, this position is an incredible opportunity to connect with stakeholders across the country and make a meaningful difference on the critical issues affecting councils and their communities.

At its heart, this role is outward facing, focused on fostering relationships with stakeholders pivotal to the success of LGNZ and its member councils. A trusted advisor to local government, the Director will oversee LGNZ's advocacy and policy work to ensure councils' views have an impact at the highest levels of decision making. They will also contribute significantly to LGNZ's event programmes.

Strong relationships with members and stakeholders are the foundation for LGNZ's advocacy positions. The Director will strike a balance between responding to emerging issues and opportunities and proactively developing policy and thought leadership.

The Director leads a high-performing Policy and Advocacy team. Working closely with the Policy & Advocacy Manager, the Director will identify and create advocacy positions, maintaining a sophisticated understanding of the local government landscape that guides both internal and external stakeholders.

This is a unique chance to chance to lead LGNZ's advocacy on the significant issues affecting local government – and to shape the future of local democracy in New Zealand.

About you:
This position would suit an inspiring and innovative leader with a strategic and proactive mindset. You will be comfortable navigating ambiguous, often fast-changing environments and priorities. You will be a creative thinker who's not afraid to challenge the status quo; someone who can grasp the broader strategic landscape, identify strong solutions and take decisive action.

Your strong interpersonal and influencing skills, coupled with the ability to build effective relationships, are crucial given the heavy focus working with people. There will be travel required for the role. The role has a strong political element, and you will need to be comfortable navigating this context with stakeholders including local and central government politicians and officials.

An understanding of local government in Aotearoa New Zealand and the role of membership organisations like LGNZ is desirable. Alongside this, strong written and verbal communication skills are essential. An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Māori would be valuable.

Other knowledge and experience:
  • At least five years of relevant professional experience working in policy, advocacy, government relations at a senior level.
  • Experience of direct influencing and working with a broad range of stakeholders at the strategic level.
  • Proven experience developing advocacy strategies/plans and implementing them, including managing projects, budgets and resources.
  • Experience building high-performing and collaborative teams.
  • An ability to develop innovative, dynamic and nimble responses to complex issues, the nous to bring others along with you, and a can-do attitude.
