As owner and operator of the National Grid, our transmission network consists of 170 substations, 25,000 transmission towers and more than 11,000 kilometres of lines across public and privately held land - transporting bulk electricity (up to 220,000 volts) from where it is generated to cities, towns, and some major industrial users.

As System Operator we operate the wholesale electricity market. As part of our role, we ensure supply (provided by generators) matches demand (by electricity users).

We are also responsible for ensuring New Zealand's electricity system is reliable, competitive, and innovative and we play an integral role in the planning of New Zealand's electricity future.


About the team


The energy industry is changing rapidly to support decarbonisation, and Transpower plays a key role to enable this change whilst remaining a fit for future organisation.

Our Customer and Strategy division leads the development and implementation of Transpower's business strategy and innovation. The division incorporates Strategy, Customer and Commercial, Energy Market Services and Innovation and Strategic Change.


Working to support and inform the General Manager Strategy and Customer, the General Management team and the broader Transpower business, the Strategy team collates and presents both global and local insights to shape business direction and the options available to be successful in our rapidly evolving context.


With the input from SME's across the business, the team produces insights on Transpower's operating environment, supports the delivery of high-quality analysis, and contributes to the shaping of Transpower's strategic agenda and the planning and implementation of initiatives by the business.


About the opportunity
You'll play an integral role in providing thought leadership within the Strategy team and across the broader Transpower business.

You'll support the Head of Strategy and GM Strategy and Customer by identifying risks and opportunities for the organisation, supported by fact-based insights and analysis.

You'll work across a broad range of topics including decarbonisation, electrification, policy changes, and technology development.

You'll also represent Transpower to a range of external stakeholders and develop effective relationships and partnerships to ensure the achievement of Transpower's strategic objectives, and provide coaching and mentoring to two Strategy Analysts.


So, what will you bring?
Demonstrated ability to influence and persuade through rigorous, fact-based analysis that supports key positions, both internal and external.

Well-developed verbal and written communication and presentation skills will be underpinned by excellent judgement and the confidence to make recommendations at the right level at the right time.


You'll enjoy synthesizing information and interpreting and understanding what is important to create useful and impactful reference documents and presentations.


Comfortable to influence and lead teams in a matrix structure, you'll have experience within the energy or infrastructure sectors and ideally an understanding of the value drivers for electricity network businesses and their implications.


To be shortlisted, your CV and cover letter will clearly convey:

  • Senior consulting experience working with executive teams
  • Analytical depth including strong quantitative and qualitative skills
  • Understanding of the regulatory frameworks and market operating models, ideally applicable to regulated infrastructure in New Zealand or overseas
