The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), the organisation represents the medical speciality of Psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand.


An exciting opportunity has now become available for an experienced Policy and Advocacy Officer to join a small and dynamic team to contribute to policy and advocacy in mental health.


The Policy and Advocacy Officer will coordinate and prepare RANZCP policies and submissions that are relevant to the practice of psychiatry and mental health in New Zealand and Australia, and to enhance the profile and strategic position of psychiatry and the RANZCP in New Zealand through a range of policy, advocacy and communications initiatives.


This role has a specific focus to:

  • Support the Manager, Tu Te Akaaka Roa
  • New Zealand National Office to develop relevant policy submissions and briefing papers and work with key stakeholders within the mental health sector in New Zealand.
  • Analyse relevant policy, and actively monitor emerging issues relevant to psychiatric practice and mental health.
  • Consult with members and committees of the RANZCP as determined by the Manager, Tu Te Akaaka Roa
  • New Zealand National Office and other members of the RANZCP's senior management team.
  • Research and prepare submissions, reports, fact sheets and other policy documents and correspondence for relevant committees, as well as concise summaries of relevant information to be included in RANZCP member communications channels.
  • Coordinate and support internal contributions to external policy processes. This includes working with the Practice & Policy Department to provide a New Zealand perspective on RANZCP College position statements and papers.
  • Provide policy support to New Zealand based committees and members who represent the RANZCP on external committees and working parties.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in an appropriate health, social science, political science or other relevant discipline.
Demonstrated experience in a range of communications and media activities.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of policy development and analysis with specific expertise in health and social arenas.
  • A good knowledge and understanding of the New Zealand health care system.
Demonstrated knowledge of Mori health issues and a commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with committee chairs and members to support the strategic prioritisation, planning, delivery, and evaluation of policy and advocacy objectives.
  • Welldeveloped written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to grasp new concepts, absorb and analyse complex information, gain consensus, formulate recommendations and produce timely and succinct correspondence, statements, submissions, briefing papers and reports.
