Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:
The Innovation Policy team sits within the Science, Innovation and International Branch of MBIE.

The team advises on how to support and further develop New Zealand's innovation ecosystem, including by identifying measures to increase business innovation and R&D.

We are looking for an experienced Policy Manager who can successfully lead a team of high-performing advisors and deliver on work programme priorities.


Some of the current priorities include:

  • Leading advice on how grow the level of business R&D across the economy in support of the government's goal to raise the total amount of R&D to 2% of GDP
  • Overseeing the operational delivery of the R&D Tax Incentive and its associated supports through Callaghan Innovation and other agencies.
  • Providing input into the reform of the Research, Science and Innovation system
  • Te Ara Paerangi, Future Pathways, on impact, commercialisation and connections between industry and research
  • Providing advice with partner agencies on the role that government can play to increase innovation within the Māori economy.


In addition to the deliverables above, this role also offers an opportunity to shape the Ministry's future advice on innovation policy, including how it supports other government priorities.

We are looking for a Policy Manager who can balance delivery with thought leadership and has the ability to effectively influence and partner with our key internal and external stakeholders.
